2023 USAFL UA Umpire Clinics

Greetings to all the USAFL UA Umpires and others (umpire wannabes?)  It is now two months out from the biggest footy carnival in the world, our very own US Nationals!  And that means that it is time for us to make sure we are prepared for running the event with the best possible umpiring crew.  To that end, your Umpire Association is once again hosting a virtual umpire clinic, on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at 9 PM Eastern/ 6 PM Pacific.  This is in addition to the field-based clinic at Nationals and your attendance is requested at both sessions.

Background

The USAFL UA seeks to improve umpire skills for all disciplines (field, goal, boundary, and coach) for all levels of umpires, from Introductory Certification (formerly Level 0) to Development Accreditation (formerly Level 1) and Advanced Accreditation (formerly Level 2).

Save The Dates

Please mark your calendar for both the virtual clinic on September 19, 2023, and be sure to book your flight to Florida to enable you to be on the footy grounds on Friday, October 13, 2023, for on-field drills and instruction.  If you are unable to make the virtual clinic, it will be recorded and posted to our website.

October 13th, 2023 – Friday 2:00 PM Eastern

This is a field-based clinic where we will be running drills to practice the skills we learn in our virtual sessions.

Clinic Content – September 19th

  • 2023 USAFL Rules (compared to AFL Laws)
  • Presentation & Communication: signals, whistle, use of voice
  • Fundamentals: teamwork, protect ball player, position
  • Situation/Match Management: covering prohibited contact (such as sling tackles), Free after disposal, dangerous tackles, and umpire abuse

  • Positioning in the two-man system
  • Signaling and Teamwork
  • Kick-out Management
  • Ruck Contest Management

For Goalies

  • Working set shots
  • Signaling
  • Communication with field and boundary umpires
